Overview / What This Opportunity Entails

The Commonwealth Fellowship Programme supports citizens from eligible Commonwealth nations to undertake structured development programs in the UK. The goal is to facilitate skills acquisition, networking, and institutional collaboration that delivers tangible developmental impact when Fellows return to their home countries.

Starting in the 2026/27 cycle, the CSC has structured the initiative into two primary strands:

  1. Commonwealth Professional Fellowships: For mid-career professionals to undertake professional development at a UK host organization working in their sector.
  2. Commonwealth Academic Fellowships: For university academic staff holding a PhD to update academic skills, engage in knowledge exchange, and build institutional partnerships at a UK university.

Six Development Themes

All proposed fellowship activities must align directly with one of the CSC’s six core development themes:

  • Science and technology for development
  • Improving population health, health systems and capacity
  • Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Strengthening peace, security and governance
  • Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  • Access, inclusion and opportunity

Fellowship Duration & Timeline

Program durations and start dates vary based on the selected strand:

  • Professional Fellowships: Must run between 6 weeks and 3 months, commencing between mid-February and mid-March 2027.
  • Academic Fellowships: Must be 3 months in duration, commencing in January or February 2027.

Self-Qualification: Do You Match the Profile?

Review the eligibility requirements based on the strand you intend to apply for:

  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of an eligible Commonwealth country (other than the UK). (Note: ~30 awards are reserved for ODA-eligible countries, and ~10 awards for non-ODA countries).
  • Professional Track Criteria: Must be a mid-career professional with at least 5 years of relevant work experience in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Academic Track Criteria: Must hold a PhD and be currently employed as an academic staff member at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Developmental Impact: Must demonstrate a clear commitment to returning home to apply acquired skills for local impact.
